5 signs your charity's marketing isn't working (and what to do about each one)

Most charities are not failing at marketing because they are doing the wrong things. They are failing because they are doing the right things inconsistently, without a clear picture of whether any of it is actually working.

Social media posts go out sporadically. The website was last updated two years ago. Events get promoted the week before they happen. Email newsletters go out only when someone finds a spare hour. And because nobody has defined what "working" looks like, nothing ever improves.

Here are five unmistakable signs that your charity's marketing needs attention and practical steps to fix each one today.

Sign 1: You cannot tell where your supporters come from

If someone asks you right now, "Where do most of your new donors, volunteers, or service users first hear about you?" , could you answer with hard data rather than a hunch?

Most non-profit leaders cannot. Without that baseline, every marketing decision and budget choice is just a guess.

  • What to do: Install Google Analytics 4 on your website (it's free). Add a mandatory single-choice "How did you hear about us?" field to your volunteer, donation, and contact forms. Review this data quarterly to see which channels actually drive results.

Sign 2: Your social media gets engagement, but zero conversions

Likes, retweets, and supportive comments feel great. But vanity metrics alone do not pay for service delivery or keep programmes running. If your posts generate engagement but fail to drive website visits, volunteer applications, or donations, your content builds awareness without a pipeline.

  • What to do: Ensure every key post features a clear, unambiguous call to action (CTA). Move past "Follow us for more" to concrete actions: "Download our free family support guide," "Register for our community workshop," or "Sign up to our monthly impact bulletin."

Sign 3: Visitors land on your website and immediately bounce

When visitors arrive on your website and exit within seconds without clicking a single link, your core messaging has stalled. If a stranger lands on your homepage and cannot understand within five seconds who you help, what you do, and what action they should take, they will leave.

  • What to do: Run a 5-second test with an outsider or volunteer. Look above the fold on your homepage: Is there a clear headline explaining your core mission? Is there one obvious, primary button (e.g., "Get Support" or "Donate Today")? Remove visual clutter and reduce competing menus.

Sign 4: You have no email list (or you never write to it)

Social media platforms are borrowed land. When platform algorithms shift, your organic reach can drop overnight. The only audience you own outright is your email subscriber list.

  • What to do: If you do not have an email list, offer a genuinely useful resource (a guide, a resource checklist, or an insightful newsletter series) in exchange for an email address. If you already have a list, commit to a realistic, predictable cadence—even a consistent monthly update is far better than sporadic blasts.

Sign 5: Your charity looks completely different everywhere

If your Instagram uses modern pastel templates, your website relies on legacy fonts, your printed fundraising leaflets feature an outdated logo, and your emails have no consistent formatting, you have a brand trust problem. Inconsistent visuals make an organisation appear informal and uncoordinated, even when the underlying work is exceptional.

  • What to do: Create a one-page Brand Guide PDF. Standardise your primary logo, exact brand colour hex codes, body/header fonts, and 3–4 bullet points describing your tone of voice. Share it with all staff, freelancers, and trustees to ensure alignment across every channel.

The common thread

All five signs point to the same underlying issue: marketing that is reactive rather than intentional. The non-profits that grow sustainably are the ones with a structured plan and the discipline to execute it steadily.
